Netflix's Godzilla Singular Point is the latest exclusive animated title that the streaming mogul has licensed. Scheduled for an April 2021 release, fans are speculating as to what the series will have in store for the giant reptilian monster. Little of the plot has been revealed as of yet, so fans are instead taking to the newly released character biographies to try and gather as much info as they can.
So far, 18 characters have been introduced. The main protagonists seem to be Mei Kamino, a research grad student who specializes in "things that don't exist," and Yun Arikawa, a young engineer working at a factory that specializes in general wares. The two have encounters with Godzilla and begin to try and unravel the mystery surrounding him. Mei's professor is missing, and so she is asked to investigate something known as "Misakioku" in his stead. This is what leads her to have her first encounter with Godzilla. Yun was investigating an abandoned Western-style house with co-workers Havel Katou and Gorou Ootaki. While Mei is more interested in studying the creature, Yun and his gang are concerned with exterminating it -- Gorou most of all.
Gorou, being a UFO fanatic, has developed a "protect the world" mentality, so he recruits his employees into his shenanigans. Yun specializes in robots and software programming, while Havel is the brawn of the group, with weight training being his hobby. Supporting them from the sidelines is the clerk and big sister of Ootaki Factory, Satomi Kanahara.
Of course, there have to be cute mascots, with Pero 2, Mei's cute dog-like AI, and Yung, Yun's rectangular partner. Both were born from the development of Yun's communication support software "Noritake." Pero lives on Mei's computer and helps her try to do good in the world, while Yung lives on Yun's smartphone and organizes information and data for him.
Of course, government officials also get involved. Head of the Japanese Ground Self-Defense Force Yoshiyasu Matsubara is always on the frontlines, ready to defend Japan from any threat. There's Michael Steven from England, who's interested in advancing weapon development with new materials. This puts him at odds with a representative from Shiva Enterprises, Tilda Miller. She has a more conservative mindset, so she often butts heads with more modern associates.
This includes Bela Bhan or "BB." BB is the head of India's newly developed Upara Research Institute. He and his daughter Rina seem to be more interested in research rather than destruction. Rina has complicated feelings because her father puts his research first, but she still takes care of him by cooking and cleaning. This aligns them with Dr. Keiei Li, a researcher for Shiva Enterprises who specializes in computational chemistry. She has an interest in Mei after reading her thesis on the internet. By her side is her butler/bodyguard Makita K. Nakagawa, who has served at a London estate for generations.
And, naturally, there's the shady government agency with hidden agendas. In this case, it takes the form of the Tsuno District Administration Bureau. Head of the Bureau is Tsunetomo Yamamoto, a man who always has a distinctive smile on his face and who has many secrets. Beneath him is Yukie Kanoko, a woman who comes from a bureaucratic family and knows many of the national secrets. Her department is funded by the Secretarial Cabinet, so because of that, she knows lots of national secrets. Finally, there's Shunya Satou, a man who works for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. This group seems to have some knowledge about the mysterious "Misakioku."
Then there's the enigmatic self-employed reporter Takehiro Kai. He tends to show up at the most unexpected times and places and seems to be gathering information about the kaiju. His background is currently unknown.
There isn't much to go on, but thanks to sites like The Kaijuologist, we can learn about these characters and try to piece together what we can. While some translations may be a bit off, especially with name pronunciations, we can get a general idea of what to expect with the new series. There are lots of mysteries to solve, characters to be wary of, and, of course, monsters to fight.
