The legendary King of Monsters, Godzilla, got his start all the way back in the year of 1954 with the original film Gojira. This film was not only a hit in its homeland Japan but a hit on a global level. This success led the giant lizard to become a global icon and, of course, spawned one of the longest ongoing film series of all time.

While Godzilla used to be the villain of humanity, he's grown to sometime be its protector, making himself plenty of enemies in the process. We'll be looking at the most powerful of those enemies with this list. However we won't just be looking at enemies from one era but all of them, meaning there may be a few enemies showing up multiple times.

10 KIRYU

The first enemy to make the list, funnily enough, is made from the bones of the original Godzilla from the 1954 film Gojira after he was destroyed by the oxygen destroyer. That enemy is Kiryu, the Millineum incarnation of the iconic Godzilla enemy Mechagodzilla. He appears in the films Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla and Godzilla: Tokyo S.O.S.

This incarnation has a myriad of different abilities. Double Maser Cannon, railguns, a maser blade, rockets, missiles, and, of course, his ultimate weapon the Absolute Zero Cannon, which can freeze an opponent on contact.

9 SHOWA MECHAGODZILLA

The original version of Mechagodzilla. Unlike the rest of the appearances of Mechagodzilla, this version has always been seen controlled by aliens bent on world domination. It is described as a "nihilistic killer" and a "consistently coldhearted and composed professional" in the book Special Graphix Godzilla vs. Mothra. This is because it's a mech that isn't able to feel emotion.

It has space beams that are able to destroy objects on contact, 4 different types of missiles, his chest beam, flaming bullets, an energy barrier, space titanium armor, and flight capabilities.

8 SUPER MECHAGODZILLA

Don't worry this is the last Mechagodzilla featured in this article. It's also the most powerful version of Mechagodzilla that will be appearing on the list. This version of Mechagodzilla made its debut in the 1993 Godzilla film, Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla II. It has the most powerful abilities out of every Mechagodzilla incarnation in history.

He, of course, has tons of projectiles in his arsenal, including arm rockets, lasers, and missiles able to paralyze even Godzilla. He also has armor able to absorb energy from things such as Godzilla's atomic breath.

7 BIOLLANTE

Biollante attempts to chow down on Godzilla.

Biollante is a villain of Godzilla's that was born from his DNA. She is a genetically modified rose-kaiju that first appeared in the 1989 Godzilla film, appropriately named Godzilla vs. Biollante. She started off simply as a giant mutated rose. Once her Godzilla cells took over, she took a more kaiju-like appearance.

Biollante is one of Godzilla's largest enemies faced throughout history and is the largest one faced during the Heisei-era. Despite her large size, she is highly mobile. She also can spit a deadly corrosive sap from her mouth.

6 SPACE GODZILLA

One of the most intelligent enemies Godzilla has ever faced. Space Godzilla first appeared in the 1994 Heisei era film, Godzilla vs. Space Godzilla. He's a very cunning and very evil enemy. He's also a genius among kaiju. The abilities he is granted with definitely mirror his intelligence which makes him an even more formidable foe.

Space Godzilla not only has regenerative abilities but can shield himself from projectiles. Unlike Godzilla, Space Godzilla also has the power of flight, energy conduction from his crystals, and telekinetic power.

5 SHOWA GHIDORAH

There is no way that the original Showa-era King Ghidorah wasn't going to make an appearance on a list about Godzilla's most powerful foes. This incarnation of King Ghidorah has made it incredibly apparent that he won't be deterred when it comes to ending the life of his eternal rival for the monster throne.

This incredibly intelligent being is said to be straight-up evil, destroying entire planets simply for fun. He wields all the classic Ghidorah abilities including flight, gravity beams, hurricane winds, magnetic powers, and incredible durability.

4 KOTM GHIDORAH

The most recent live-action Godzilla enemy on this list, the recent incarnation of King Ghidorah from the Monsterverse-era Godzilla: King of the Monsters gave the big lizard a run for his money. Fun fact: This Ghidorah is larger than every other incarnation besides the anime.

When it comes to abilities, this Ghidorah has a great mixed bag of each Ghidorah before it, plus some amazing new ones. This includes weather control via his Bio-Electrical nature and a powerful call that causes other kaiju to submit to him.

3 DESTOROYAH

The 1995 film that marked the end of the Heisei-era of the Godzilla film series gave us the debut of one of the scariest foes in Godzilla's rogues' gallery. That film was Godzilla vs. Destoroyah and it introduced an opponent literally made to destroy Godzilla. This creature is a living oxygen destroyer which is the tool used to kill Godzilla in his debut.

Taking a look at Destoroyah's name, one may notice his name comes from the oxygen destroyer, so one can only imagine that his destructive power could destroy an entire town. He also has amazing regenerative abilities.

2 KEIZER GHIDORAH

Making its first and only appearance in the 2004 film made for Godzilla's 50th anniversary is Godzilla's second most fearsome foe Monster X/Keizer King Ghidorah. Ghidorah would not let anyone other than himself have the first and second slots on a list detailing Godzilla's most powerful opponents.

Keizer Ghidorah has some of the best physical durability of any Godzilla enemy, being able to take a fully powered atomic blast point blank with no damage sustained. Not only that, he can steal energy from opponents which causes him to become even more powerful than before.

1 ANIME GHIDORAH

While the 2017 Godzilla anime-film trilogy was nothing to write home about, it did spawn one of the strongest incarnations of the King (or in this case Mother) of Monsters. To combat such a strong "hero," the creators of this version of Godzilla needed to create a foe strong enough to stand up to it. The person to step up to that role was none other than King Ghidorah.

This version of Ghidorah is a creature that inhabits the void between dimensions. For years it has used its supergravity to consume worlds. It can travel through dimensions, distort space and time, and has its iconic electric powers.
