When Godzilla: King of the Monsters unleashes the Titans of the world on us in the MonsterVerse's mega monster mash-up in May, we'll all be backing Godzilla. However, from what the movie's shaping Ghidorah, the three-headed dragon, as, well, it seems like the title of "king" will have to be wrested from him and not everyone's favorite giant lizard.

This is why we're actually relieved that director Michael Dougherty appears to be following the old lore, including Mothra as an ally in the brawl to come. However, thanks to a blink-and-you'll-miss-it moment from the latest teaser clip, it appears Godzilla has another secret ally that'll be going after the electrifying dragon as well.

In the one minute clip, Warner Bros./Legendary reveals all the players on the board, including some creatures that haven't been named yet. As the trailer details how humanity will be joining forces with Godzilla and Mothra, we actually spot Rodan in an unexpected position. Initially, we assumed he would be going up against Godzilla, as in the older films, and with the shots of the U.S. Army and Monarch's military unit attacking the giant pteranodon, it's perfectly understandable that he'd be framed as an enemy. But a brief action sequence shows Rodan actually going after Ghidorah, hinting that his role is more heroic than expected.

"The One Born of Fire" has been seen passing over towns, his wingspan decimating them while taking down fighter jets left, right and center as he razes Capitol Hill. But at the 0:32 mark, there's an unmistakable shot of Rodan, claws out, trying to kill Ghidorah in the air. It's an epic moment, as we see the fiery-red, cavernous skin of Rodan going in full-blast against the dragon. Sadly, in the aftermath of that rapid moment, it does seem like the taller Ghidorah will have the advantage.

It's perhaps why when we look back to Ghidorah around the 0:18 mark, he's standing atop a volcano, lightning striking as if it's emerged victorious in establishing dominance over the skies. This could well be a hint it bests Rodan, and perhaps offers clues why the latter may opt to team up with Godzilla and Mothra in a battle royale later on.

It wouldn't be the first time this has happened, of course; in 1964's Ghidorah, the Three-Headed Monster from Toho, Rodan went from being a straight-up villain to an ally of Godzilla and Mothra. In that film, Rodan and Godzilla turned their backs on humanity, which left Mothra alone to face Ghidorah. However, inspired by her, they quickly joined the fray and joined forces to defeat Ghidorah, with Rodan playing a major role in the overall assault.

We're not sure which source material Dougherty is following, if any, but while he may not be teaming the monsters up per se, his sequel may end up offering fans a series of one-on-one brawls. In fact, Godzilla, Rodan and Ghidorah may simply end up fighting each other whenever they cross paths, because at the end of the day, if you want to claim the throne, you have to take out the biggest and baddest of all the Kaiju.

Directed by Michael Dougherty, Godzilla: King of the Monsters stars Vera Farmiga, Ken Watanabe, Sally Hawkins, Kyle Chandler, Millie Bobby Brown, Bradley Whitford, Thomas Middleditch, Charles Dance, O’Shea Jackson Jr., Aisha Hinds, and Zhang Ziyi. The film opens May 31, 2019.
