While Godzilla may be king of the monsters, his latest cinematic outing is far from king of the critical reviews, with Godzilla: King of The Monsters sitting at 54% on Rotten Tomatoes after early reviews.

Much like the buildings in a kaiju battle, Godzilla: King Of The Monsters is getting demolished by critics, with Fred Topel of We Live Entertainment even going as far to label the film "the worst American Godzilla film." Topel was not alone in his disdain for the Michael Dougherty-directed film, with Ben Travis of Empire Magazine calling the movie "an overload of repetitive, joyless destruction that mistakes volume and demolition for actual excitement."

But all isn't doom and gloom for Toho's favorite giant monster, with Bob Chipman of Escapist Magazine awarding the film a coveted 10 out of 10, declaring the movie "a transcendent, elevating, purely cinematic experience." He even went so far as to call Godzilla: King of The Monsters "The Avengers of giant monster movies," alluding to the film's menagerie of destructive creatures including fan favorites such as King Ghidora and Mothra.

It remains to be seen if the sequel of the critically-mixed 2014 Godzilla will ultimately pass or fall short of its predecessor's 75% score on Rotten Tomatoes. Regardless of critical reception, this will not be the last kaiju fans see of the Big G, with a film pitting Godzilla against King Kong set for a March 13, 2020 release.
