WARNING: The following article contains spoilers for Godzilla: King of the Monsters, in theaters now.

Godzilla: King of the Monsters director Michael Dougherty has teased the return of Mothra following the hints laid down in the monster brawl its species was still alive.

Mothra sacrificed herself to power Godzilla up to fight the three-headed dragon, Ghidorah, but the finale of the film showed an egg had been found in the Yuccan province where its temple was. When asked by a Twitter user if the Mothra we saw in the film was gone for good, Dougherty responded this was far from the truth.

"Mothra never really dies," Dougherty tweeted back. "She represents the eternal cycle of birth, life, death, and rebirth. And she knows it." Mothra was disintegrated by Ghidorah's lightning in the movie and her spirit rejuvenated a dying Godzilla, enhancing his atomic powers, thus allowing him to defeat Ghidorah.

The presence of this egg, coupled with the director's words, however, indicate that while many speculated the egg was Mothra's offspring, it may actually be a receptacle in which the Queen of the Monsters can transfer her essence and overall consciousness, being reborn into a new body like the old Toho movies to join Godzilla in future battles.
