The final trailer for Godzilla: King of the Monsters suggests Legendary Pictures' fledgling MonsterVerse could expand well beyond Godzilla, King Kong and new (if familiar) additions Mothra, Rodan and King Ghidorah.
The new footage establishes there are 17 Titans -- that's the MonsterVerse's term for kaiju -- "and counting," which will no doubt lead to a new round of speculation among fans of the classic Godzilla films. What's more, they're moving in a pack, responding to the commands of "an alpha," Ghidorah. And the only chance humanity has against this threat? You guessed it.
Directed by Michael Dougherty, the sequel to 2014's Godzilla follows members of the crypto-zoological agency Monarch as it confronts Godzilla and the threats to humanity posed by the appearance of gargantuan monsters Mothra, Rodan and the three-headed King Ghidorah.
Godzilla: King of the Monsters is the third chapter in Legendary's MonsterVerse, following the 2014 reboot of Godzilla and the 2017 King Kong origin film Kong: Skull Island. It will be followed in 2020 by the crossover Godzilla vs. Kong.
Directed by Michael Dougherty, Godzilla: King of the Monsters stars Vera Farmiga, Ken Watanabe, Sally Hawkins, Kyle Chandler, Millie Bobby Brown, Bradley Whitford, Thomas Middleditch, Charles Dance, O’Shea Jackson Jr., Aisha Hinds and Zhang Ziyi. The film opens May 31.
