Godzilla vs. Kong's first wave of reviews are in, and things are looking good for the upcoming MonsterVerse film.

Of the 28 reviews listed by Rotten Tomatoes, 79% of them gave the film a "fresh" rating. However, the movie still has a long way to go before it is officially labeled as "Certified Fresh" or "rotten." If it maintains that score, it will have the highest rating of all the MonsterVerse films, beating Godzilla (76%), Kong: Skull Island (75%) and Godzilla: King of the Monsters (42%).

Godzilla vs. Kong will see the two titular monsters duke it out, with director Adam Wingard saying that the fight will have a clear winner and that he knew who would win the fight since he was in second grade. However, the two may need to put aside their differences when Mechagodzilla is unleashed into the world.

Mechagodzilla's origins remain a mystery. However, the current theory among fans, thanks to reporting by Collider after a set visit, is that the sinister Apex organization will use one of the severed heads of Ghidorah to build the robotic monster. Ghidorah was the primary antagonist in Godzilla: King of the Monsters and was killed by Godzilla. However, Apex was seen purchasing one of those heads at the end of the film, and Collider reported seeing one on the set of Godzilla vs. Kong "wired into a control station."

Godzilla vs. Kong is the fourth film in Legendary's MonsterVerse. Previous films include Godzilla (2014), Kong: Skull Island (2017) and Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019). An animated series titled Skull Island set in the same universe will debut on Netflix in the near future.

Legends collide in Godzilla vs. Kong as these mythic adversaries meet in a spectacular battle for the ages, with the fate of the world hanging in the balance. Kong and his protectors undertake a perilous journey to find his true home, and with them is Jia, a young orphaned girl with whom he has formed a unique and powerful bond. But they unexpectedly find themselves in the path of an enraged Godzilla, cutting a swath of destruction across the globe. The epic clash between the two titans -- instigated by unseen forces -- is only the beginning of the mystery that lies deep within the core of the Earth.

Directed by Adam Wingard and written by Eric Pearson and Max Borenstein, Godzilla vs. Kong stars Alexander Skarsgard, Millie Bobby Brown, Rebecca Hall and Brian Tyree Henry. The film arrives in theaters and on HBO Max on March 31.
