President and CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment Jim Ryan recently confirmed a series adapting Sony's hugely successful God of War video game saga ia currently in development.

Ryan commented on the project during a Q&A at a Sony Business Briefing. He noted that the show was in the works for the Prime Video streaming service. No other details about the upcoming adaptation were provided at the briefing.

This is not the first time news of the project has surfaced. It was previously reported a Prime Video God of War series was in the works with The Expanse creators and executive producers Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby attached, along with The Wheel of Time showrunner Rafe Judkins. It was also reported Sony Pictures Television and PlayStation Productions will collaborate on the show, as is the case with all projects based on PlayStation titles. These particular details have not yet been officially confirmed by Sony.

PlayStation's original God of War trilogy was release between 2005 and 2010 and quickly became a console classic. The saga pit the demigod Kratos against the entirety of the Greek pantheon. The next chapter of the franchise came with 2018's God of War, which brought Kratos face-to-face against Norse gods and titans. The game also introduced the demigod's son, Atreus, and offered players an older Kratos, now on the path to redemption instead of pure destruction.

The next video game instalment is God of War: Ragnarok, which will launch exclusively on PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4. While the game does not yet have an official release date, it was recently reported the game will be released on Sept. 30. It was originally scheduled to be released in 2021 release, but was forced to be delayed due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, as well as health issues suffered by Kratos voice actor Christopher Judge.

The actor previously explained, "I need to be forthcoming. This has been approved by no one. To the beloved fandom, Ragnarok was delayed because of me... August 2019, I couldn’t walk. Had to have back surgery, both hips replaced, and, knee surgery. They waited for me too rehab."

Confirmation of a God of War series arrived alongside the announcement of several other adaptations of major Sony video games, including Gran Turismo and Horizon Zero Dawn, the latter of which will arrive on Netflix. As with God of War, details concerning these shows are scarce.
