PlayStation's State of Play revealed brand-new details about the upcoming God of War Ragnarök with a new trailer.

The trailer showcases a mysterious figure critizising Kratos for his actions and lack of understanding for God-hood, calling him the "monster that kills without cause." Meanwhile, Atreus argues with his father as Kratos calls him out for keeping secrets. Some fans guessed the voice over and the shadowed figure Atreus greets at a door may be Odin, who is poised to drive a rift between the father and son duo.

God of War's hotly-anticipated sequel revealed its launch date in July after months of speculation from fans. Despite its fast-approaching launch date, the developers have released few details about the game up until now. Instead, fans relied on leaks and in-depth analysis of the spots of content revealed so far, such as trailers and the collector editions of God of War Ragnarök.

A 16" Mjölnir replica included in God of War Ragnarök's Collector and Jötnar Editions ignited numerous fan theories after the reveal in July. Eagle-eyed gamers noted that the replica contains what appear to be several rune slots in the design, something the God of War games add to certain weapons to allow for additional boosts, similar to the Leviathan Axe and the Blades of Chaos. As Thor plays an antagonist in the series, many speculated that players defeat the Thunder God at some point in God of War Ragnarök.

Like his son, Odin's antagonistic shadow settled unseen throughout God of War, and he's set to play a much more prominent villain in the sequel. Developers called Odin the most challenging character to design, which sparked interest from gamers eager to see the Asgardian king's appearance. A leak of God of War Ragnarök's official art book finally gave fans their first glimpse at Odin's surprising and unique design. The leak shows Odin as a deathly-looking figure with stringy, blond hair, sallow cheeks and a dour expression, and instead of an eyepatch as usually depicted, Odin has one golden eye.

The potential art book leak also unveiled new details about God of War Ragnarök's plot. If the leak is accurate, the story revolves heavily around destiny and fatherhood. According to the description, Odin appears as the main antagonist to both Kratos and Atreus in different ways; for Kratos, Odin becomes the "ultimate nightmare scenario" as he tries to act as a replacement father figure to Atreus. Meanwhile, Odin stands as both the blockade and the only means to Atreus' achieving his ultimate goal.

God of War Ragnarök launches on Nov. 9, 2022, for PlayStation 4 and 5.
