Following the gameplay reveal for Santa Monica Studio's God of War: Ragnarok at the PlayStation Showcase event, fans were treated to some art of the characters they can expect to encounter.

The images that were shared across Instagram revealed casting details and visuals for the various new faces alongside some old favorites. In addition to the return of Kratos and a slightly aged-up Atreus, fans were finally given a glimpse of Thor, who was teased at the end of the previous game. However, the developers have opted for a mythology-accurate rendition of the god of thunder. Compared to his more chiseled Marvel counterpart, the Thor that Kratos will face is significantly more rotund with a head of red hair.

While many might only know the character through the blonde interpretation from Marvel Comics, the version of Thor played by Ryan Hurst is based on stories of the god in Norse mythology. Thor is a notorious beer lover in the Old Norse Edda, and he's often characterized as a glutton. One story in particular claimed that he drank half of the ocean as a challenge, and can easily eat two whole goats. In 2018's God of War, the talking head of Mimir, also featured in the images, foreshadowed Thor's appearance by calling him a "fat dobber." Some fans will also see a slight resemblance to Thor's appearance in Avengers: Endgame.

Among the returning faces are allies and enemies both. The helpful dwarven craftsman Brok and Sindri, who helped customize the player's gear in the previous game, will be along for the ride once more. They are joined by another dwarf named Durlin, accompanied by a strange octopus-like companion. As for returning antagonists, Freya appears not to have forgiven Kratos for the death of her son, Baldur. Her outfit is noticeably more ragged than before, and her eyes are marked by tears.

The images also presented two new yet very important figures to Norse mythology. The Asgardian god of war Tyr, played by Ben Pendergast, was hinted at in the previous game. The recent gameplay trailer suggested it was important that Kratos find him to aid in the battle against Asgard. The character was depicted ominously holding his left arm, which could be foreshadowing for his encounter with Fenrir, the wolf monster of Norse mythology. There was also the introduction of Angrboda, who was revealed during the showcase to be one of the last remaining giants alongside the half-giant Atreus/Loki.

While the images presented a sizable portion of the cast, the showcase implied there are still plenty more to be unveiled, with the likes of Odin ominously looming in the background.

Launching exclusively for PlayStation 5, Sony Interactive Entertainment has yet to confirm a release window for God of War: Ragnarok. Breaking the fourth wall, a mysterious character at the end of the trailer teases fans that they'll get their answers "soon enough."
