Amazon Studios' Head of Television, Vernon Sanders, discussed what direction the God of War series will take in its first season.

Speaking to Collider, Sanders explained how showrunner Rafe Judkins and writers Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby will approach adapting the popular RPG. "At the center of it all is this story of fathers and sons, and families, set against this giant epic landscape," he said. "So what Rafe and Mark and Hawk have come up with for the first season, and for the series, I think, is both incredibly true to the source material, and also compelling on its own. If you never played the game, you will fall in love with the show and feel very much invited in. So we think it's going to be huge."

The God of War Franchise Expands to Prime Video

"This is something I've been working on for a long time with Mark and Hawk," Judkins said. "So, the announcement just came out but it's something we've known about and been involved with for a while. "So, you know, it's really exciting. I love the games, I love working with those two guys, they're great, really smart, love The Expanse. I'm sure many others are fans as well. Iron Man, also a good film. Don't know if you've seen it." Judkins also serves as the showrunner on Prime Video's The Wheel of Time series.

Created by David Jaffe, the first God of War game debuted in 2005 from Sony's Santa Monica Studio for the PlayStation 2. The game followed Kratos, a ruthless Spartan soldier in service of the Greek Pantheon who is charged with killing Ares. It was a hit upon release and spawned two mainline sequels and three spin-offs across an eight-year period. The franchise was revived in 2018 with a new God of War game that shifted the setting to Norse mythology and recast Kratos as an unlikely father, grieving the death of his wife Faye and struggling to guide his son, Atreus, while also being hunted by the Aesir. The reboot has received universal acclaim and will serve as the primary basis for the series.

2018's God of War was followed up by a sequel, subtitled Ragnarök, which sees Kratos end his conflict against the Aesir amid the prophesied end of days for the Norse deities. Like its predecessor, Ragnarök has become a critical success and hit a gaming milestone as the fastest-selling PlayStation game of all time, while also setting up future adventures across the mythological world.

Prime Video's God of War series does not yet have a release date.
