Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery writer and director Rian Johnson revealed that he wasn't too happy about the presence of a subtitle for his new film.

In an interview with The Atlantic, Johnson shared that he aimed to make each film in the franchise self-contained and avoid the inclusion of the first film's name in a subtitle. "Honestly, I'm pissed off that we have A Knives Out Mystery in the title. You know? I want it to just be called Glass Onion," he said. "I get it, and I want everyone who liked the first movie to know this is next in the series, but also, the whole appeal to me is it's a new novel off the shelf every time. But there's a gravity of a thousand suns toward serialized storytelling," the director continued.

Glass Onion is the second film in the Knives Out franchise, with detective Benoit Blanc (Daniel Craig) at the center of each story. Johnson explained how the new Netflix whodunnit was a tough genre to navigate, given how it needed to be more than just unraveling a mystery. "It's very easy to mistakenly assume that the mystery is what people are interested in, that the picking-up of clues and solving the mystery is going to keep people entertained. It will for about 20 minutes. You need the heart of a thriller; you need some kind of actual story," he shared.

Keeping the Benoit Blanc Films Original

Glass Onion has been well received by critics and had a successful, week-long theatrical run before releasing on Netflix. While fans await the third movie, Johnson shared his reservations about making too many Knives Out films. Namely, he expressed concern over "turning the crank" on each film, forcing it rather than finding a legitimate reason to make it. Johnson expressed the need to make the third movie, in particular, feel "scary and dangerous" by taking a different direction from the first two films.

Craig shared similar feelings about avoiding "churning" out films. Both he and Johnson would step away from making more films in the franchise whenever they felt they weren't good enough. Craig added. However, the James Bond star is still hopeful and excited about the next film, confirming that Johnson already has ideas that he will soon begin working on.
