Girls Gone Wild Producer Wants To Sue Piranha 3D

How upset is Girls Gone Wild mogul Joe Francis over the idea that a character in Piranha 3D is based on him? Well, he's already threatening to sue even without seeing the movie...

The Hollywood Reporter has the letter from Francis' legal counsel to Piranha studio The Weinstein Company, which promises that "any defamatory or disparaging statements, or depictions, in the media or in the film itself, or other statements that portray Mr. Francis in a false light, will be met with swift litigation."

The concern comes from Piranha star Jerry O'Connell telling reporters, "I get to play Joe Francis! Oh, wait. For legal reasons I'm supposed to say, 'I play someone loosely based on Joe Francis.'"; his character in the movie, Derrick Jones, is a softcore porn director behind the Wild Wild Girls franchise, and implied to be shooting those younger than 18, something that Francis takes issue with:

I appreciate a good parody as much as the next guy, but to associate me with drugs and the filming of underage girls crosses a definite line. Jerry O'Connell has repeatedly and emphatically stated on the public record that he is “playing Joe Francis,” NOT a fictional character based on me... Clearly, this film was intended to be more than a mere parody, and I intend to seek damages if and when the film is distributed.

The movie is due for release next week.
