Scream VI will release in the first quarter of 2023, and from Paramount's trailers, it seems Ghostface is different from his previous appearances. Over the years, fans and critics of the Scream films have questioned Ghostface's abilities, suggesting a distinctly supernatural element to them. Now, Scream VI's trailer, starring Jenna Ortega, suggests that Paramount may have finally caved to the Scream franchise's biggest ask.

The character of Ghostface has always been a play on the supernatural. From the moniker of 'Ghostface' itself to the character's history of playing on the recent trauma of the deceased, there is an element that blurs the lines between serial killer and vengeful spirit. That being said, the character has explicitly only ever been human, meaning the new Ghostface could be the scariest one yet. Those taking up the mantle of Ghostface have been known to use trickery and technology to appear superhuman or supernatural, but they have always only ever been sadistic people.

Scream VI's Trailer Reveals Ghostface's Possibly Supernatural Abilities

From Scream VI's official trailer, it seems the franchise is finally caving to this theme of the supernatural. Though it is not expressly communicated as such, there are several hints that suggest it, such as Jeanna Ortega's narration and the reveal of the Ghostface shrine. Jenna Ortega states plainly that "this isn't like any other Ghostface," a fact supported by the clip of Ghostface's interaction with Courteney Cox in the trailer. While little is mentioned about Scream VI's Ghostface shrine and its Easter eggs, one can imagine it has something to do with this new killer's form -- and all of that points to a supernatural twist.

Ghostface's supernatural abilities have always been hotly debated among fans. While the identity has been taken up by over 11 characters throughout the Scream franchise, they all share certain aspects and tactics that suggest something more than simple mimicry is at work. The Ghostface character can throw fully grown men across the room, disappear and reappear as if by magic and mimic the voices of one's deceased loved ones. All of this is explained away, of course, but never quite well enough to satiate the audience's curiosity. While the new Ghostface mask could tease an iconic killer's return, one explanation for this repeated display of seemingly supernatural power is precisely that -- supernatural power.

A Supernatural Take On Ghostface Could Better Explain Scream

This supernatural twist would also explain the franchise's recurring protagonists. Often throughout the series, one might find themselves thinking just how unlucky a handful of people could be. Though the character of Sidney Prescott will not be returning to deal with Scream VI's new Ghostface, she has appeared in each and every installment of the franchise before that, which meant dealing with several iterations of the character. It is almost like the figure haunts her, manifesting in those she is close with, such as her estranged brother or cousin. A supernatural twist to the killer could explain this whirlwind of violence and murder that seems to follow Sidney.

To see if Ghostface takes on a supernatural tone, Scream VI stalks theaters on March 10.
