The director of 2016's Ghostbusters, Paul Feig, has expressed interest in seeing his version of the team cross paths with the incarnation from Ghostbusters: Afterlife.

"What's so great, in the comic book world, they've done a lot of crossover ones where there's like an interdimensional rip and our team joins up with the original Ghostbusters," Feig told /Film. "So the fact that that's already been laid and made comic book canon, anything could happen so who knows. I would love to see that team come back. We had so much fun making that movie, for whatever controversy it caused. The fact that so many kids love that, that we won the Nickelodeon Best Movie of the Year Award that year makes me very happy."

Despite his personal experiences, there's no bad blood between Feig and the new team behind Afterlife. In fact, Feig shared his thoughts on the trailer upon its release, writing "This looks so awesome. Huge congrats to Jason Reitman and his amazing cast and crew. I cannot WAIT to see this!" followed by "#weareallghostbusters."

Feig originally had loose plans to follow up on his movie with a version that involved ghostbusting around the world. However, the reboot received immediate backlash, bombed at the box office and received a cavalcade of negative reviews from both critics and fans.

Sony would eventually make the decision to not follow up with a sequel, instead greenlighting Afterlife, which acts as a sequel to the original series that was written by Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis. Jason Reitman, the son of the director who helmed Ghostbusters and Ghostbusters II, will be taking over directing duties, and stars from the original movies are also set to return, including Bill Murray and Sigourney Weaver.
