In January, Reitman announced he would be developing a sequel to the two films, notably skipping Paul Feig's 2016 reboot film. Casting breakdowns for the film have indicated that four teenagers/pre-teens will serve as recruits to the Ghostbusters. Although Wolfhard and Grace have been cast, it's still unknown who the other two will be. Ernie Hudson previously teased the original cast's involvement in the film, though he later walked those remarks back.

Reitman himself is the son of Ghostbusters and Ghostbusters 2 director Ivan Reitman. Much of the cast of Feig's reboot reacted to news of the new film positively, with the notable exception of Leslie Jones.
