Ernie Hudson, who played Winston Zeddemore in the original two Ghostbusters films, might have revealed Rick Moranis' return in Ghostbusters: Afterlife.

It was previously said Moranis, who played Louis Tully in Ghostbusters (1984) and Ghostbusters II, wouldn't be appearing in the upcoming sequel. When Living Less Fearless asked Hudson if that was accurate, he replied "I think the studios probably want to hold that one. I love Rick. But yeah, I’ll let them share that."

Afterlife exists in the same continuity as the two Ghostbusters movies from the 1980s, rather than the 2016 reboot. The film is expected to include appearances by several actors from Ghostbusters (1984), including Bill Murray, Sigourney Weaver, and Dan Aykroyd, in addition to Hudson. During an interview in May 2020, Murray claimed Moranis had passed on Afterlife, saying he and the late Harold Ramis -- who played Egon Spengler in the '80s Ghostbusters films and co-created the franchise with Aykroyd -- would be "greatly missed for so many reasons."

Moranis semi-retired from live-action acting in the late 1990s to focus on raising his two children after his wife, Ann Belsky, died of cancer in 1991. He also turned down a cameo in the Ghostbusters reboot in 2015, saying "I wish them well. I hope it's terrific. But it just makes no sense to me. Why would I do just one day of shooting on something I did 30 years ago?"

More recently, however, Moranis has gradually resumed acting. In addition to appearing in the TV special An Afternoon with SCTV, Moranis reprised his Spaceballs character Lord Dark Helmet in a voice-only role for an episode of The Goldbergs. He's also signed on to reprise his role as Wayne Szalinski from the Honey, I Shrunk the Kids films in Disney's upcoming sequel Shrunk. The movie was slated to begin shooting in early 2020 but was ultimately delayed by the ongoing coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

In September 2020, Moranis appeared in a Mint Mobile commercial as himself alongside Ryan Reynolds. About a month later, he was the victim of an unprovoked assault from a stranger in New York City. A 35-year-old man identified as Marquis Ventura was subsequently arrested in connection to the attack on Moranis.

Directed by Jason Reitman, Ghostbusters: Afterlife stars Finn Wolfhard, Carrie Coon, Paul Rudd and Mckenna Grace. The film arrives in theaters Nov. 11.
