Ghostbusters, They're Back in Town!

The next Ghostbusters film serves as a direct sequel to 2021's Afterlife, which was itself a legacy sequel to the original Ghostbusters (1984) and Ghostbusters II (1989). In addition to being the fourth main-series installment in the franchise, the upcoming Afterlife sequel is also the fifth Ghostbusters film overall, counting the standalone reboot from 2016.

December's Ghostbusters 4 sees Afterlife stars Paul Rudd, Carrie Coon, Finn Wolfhard and McKenna Grace reprise their roles as Gary Grooberson, Callie Spengler, Trevor Spengler and Phoebe Spengler, respectively. This time around, Mr. Grooberson and the Spengler clan will be full-fledged Ghostbusters, complete with the classic jumpsuits. They will be joined by legacy Ghostbusters Ray Stantz and Winston Zeddemore, with Dan Aykroyd and Ernie Hudson reprising their own respective roles.

Despite his involvement in Afterlife, it remains to be seen if original Ghostbusters lead Bill Murray will reprise his role as Peter Venkman in the upcoming sequel. That said, Ghostbusters 4 is expected to feature other legacy stars, including Annie Potts as Janine Melnitz and William Atherton as Walter Peck. Meanwhile, Logan Kim and Celeste O'Connor are attached to reprise their roles as Podcast and Lucky Domingo, respectively, from Afterlife. Rounding out the untitled sequel's cast are franchise newcomers Kumail Nanjiani, Patton Oswalt, James Acaster and Emily Alyn Lind, who have been cast in undisclosed roles.

Afterlife was directed by Jason Reitman (son of original Ghostbusters duology director Ivan Reitman) from a screenplay he co-wrote with Gil Kenan (Poltergeist, Scream: The TV Series). The upcoming sequel sees Jason Reitman and Kenan return to pen the script, with Kenan taking over as director this time around. It will be the first Ghostbusters film made without the involvement of Ivan Reitman, who produced both the 2016 reboot and Afterlife prior to his death in 2022.
