<i>Ghost Rider</i> Stalls at Box Office

Despite early predictions that Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance would coast to an easy box-office victory, the Nicolas Cage sequel sputtered during Presidents Day Weekend, finishing third behind Safe House and The Vow.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Columbia Pictures’ Spirit of Vengeance grossed an estimated $22 million, 52 percent less than the first Ghost Rider‘s $45.5 million opening during the same weekend in 2007. Today’s receipts should bring the figure to $25.5 million, short of the $30 million to $35 million that pre-release tracking had indicated. The film, directed by Brian Taylor and Mark Neveldine, cost $57 million to produce.

Safe House, the Denzel Washington-Ryan Reynolds action thriller, grossed $24 million in its second weekend (expected to inch to $28.5 million), followed closely by the Rachel McAdams-Channing Tatum romantic drama The Vow with $23.6 million ($27.4 million by the end of the day). Journey 2: Mysterious Island came in at No. 4 with $20.1 million, trailed by This Means War with $17.6 million.
