WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Ghost Rider: Kushala Infinity Comic #2, available now on Marvel Unlimited.
Marvel Unlimited's newest Infinity Comic recently introduced fans to Olivia Oberta, a paranormal reporter who happens to be the descendant of Kushala, an ancient Ghost Rider. Now, Ghost Rider: Kushala Infinity Comic #2 by Taboo, B. Earl, Guillermo Sanna, Vanesa R. Del Rey, Jordie Bellaire, and VC's Joe Sabino - officially makes Olivia the new Spirit Rider.
In Ghost Rider: Kushala Infinity Comic #1, Olivia is researching her distant cousin, Jeffrey McKracken, who was an adventurer and explorer in the early 20th century. He disappeared mysteriously in the '20s but left behind a journal, detailing his adventures. With the help of a family friend, Olivia is finally able to track down the journal, which she believes connects to the disappearance of her Uncle Edgar, who had been investigating a mysterious government project involving Pluto's moons and the afterlife before he went missing. Unfortunately, Olivia's research partner steals the McKracken journal and delivers it to Doctor Doom before she has an opportunity to read it.
But at the beginning of Ghost Rider: Kushala Infinity Comic #2, Olivia has no idea the precious journal has been stolen. She is focusing her attention on something much more important: her young daughter Heather Rae. She tells her little girl the story of their ancestor Kushala and how she became both the Spirit Rider and the Sorcerer Supreme after the Spirit of Vengeance came to her following the brutal murder of her family. Despite its tragic beginnings, the story is clearly a source of pride for Olivia that captivates her daughter. Sadly, their peaceful moment is violently interrupted by the sudden appearance of Doctor Doom's Doombots. A Doombot quickly grabs Heather Rae and carries her through the rift while another of the evil robots advances on Olivia.
Seeing her child taken from her awakens a wave of anger in Olivia like nothing she's ever experienced. Her head ignites into a crown of flames as she is possessed by Kushala, the Spirit Rider. Kushala gives Olivia great strength, which allows her to make short work of the remaining Doombot. But, the rift has closed behind the other bot and Heather Rae, leaving the new hero alone with the spirit of her ancestor. Kushala explains that Olivia has been keeping her alive by continuing to tell her story, and that she can help Olvia get her daughter back, but that the journey will be full of danger and pain. Olivia is willing to embrace the burning spirit of vengeance and any potential consequences to save her daughter.
Kushala tells Olivia that Doom kidnapped Heather Rae as part of his quest to obtain a powerful cosmic weapon called the Wands of Watoomb. It seems that McKracken's journal and Olivia's family are closely linked to the Wands. Since McKracken is the key, Kushala reveals that the Spirit Rider has the power to travel through time using memories, so Olivia uses a photo of her distant cousin to travel to his time and continue her search for her daughter.
Much like the many Ghost Riders before her, Olivia has discovered her connection with the Spirit of Vengeance during a traumatic event. Luckily, she has always felt a connection to Kushala, so she already has some context for her new powers. As the Spirit Rider, Olivia will face countless challenges, but it might be her only chance to get the answers about her family's history that she has been searching for. The power to travel through time will certainly come in handy for the investigative reporter as she begins to make her mark as a hero.
