A dedicated fan pulled off one of the most difficult aspects of Ghost Rider's look just in time for a Halloween costume: the perpetually flaming skull that marks the Spirit of Vengeance.

Reddit user Kostini has created an impressive Ghost Rider skull mask, complete with what appears to be the superhero's signature halo of hellfire sprouting from the top of his skull. Several pictures have been posted to the r/cosplay subreddit including some close-up shots of the head, several action shots of the cosplayer in motorcycle leathers with the Hellfire Chain or astride a motorcycle, and even a candid outtake of the superhuman checking his "Hotmail" on his phone while wearing reading glasses.

To attain the fiery effect, Kostini built the entire mask from scratch. Detailing the process on a different subreddit, they explained that the flames themselves were made from polyfiber stuffing that was shaped with two types of glue and manual twisting. After airbrushing orange, red and yellow gradients for color and depth, two runs of LED lighting were added. A battery pack provides the power source and the glow can be dimmed or brightened via a microcontroller. Kostini estimates the whole build took about 150 - 200 hours over the course of three weeks, finishing just days before Halloween.

The Marvel character has had dozens of incarnations in the comics, but the 50th anniversary of the original Johnny Blaze is coming in 2022, a year that has been dubbed "The Year of Vengeance" by Marvel in tribute. A new ongoing horror series written by Benjamin Percy (X Lives of Wolverine) and illustrated by Cory Smith (Conan the Barbarian) will be part of the Ghost Rider celebration. Blaze will be living a quiet small-town life with a wife and two kids, but haunted by visions during the day and tormented by monsters at night.

In other media, the character has also been portrayed by Nicolas Cage on the big screen in a self-titled film in 2007 and the 2011 sequel Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance. In 2016, the Robbie Reyes version of the supernatural spirit appeared on the television show Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. with Gabriel Luna in the role. In 2019 a series on Hulu was scrapped and there's still no definitive word on when the skeletal being will be seen in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
