As the Ghost Rider, Robbie Reyes has a knack for turning whatever he's driving into his own personal demonic ride. While he usually drives a souped-up 1969 Dodge Charger with an exposed air intake, Robbie has transformed trucks, construction equipment, and even a Celestial into a supercharged demon-fighting machine.

Thanks to his creativity, knowledge of engineering, and supernatural powers, Robbie has driven some truly wicked rides. Empyre #1 (by Al Ewing and Valerio Schiti) gave Robbie a chance to outdo himself by taking control of a classic Marvel vehicle: an Avengers Quinjet.

Marvel's Empyre Placed the Avengers in the Middle of an Intergalactic War

At the beginning of Empyre, the eons-long conflict between the Kree and the Skrull appeared to end overnight. As the Fantastic Four investigated this unlikely peace, they found a Kree-Skrull ship containing the Young Avengers' Hulkling. Thanks to his royal Kree and Skrull lineage, Hulkling was recognized by both races to be their one true leader, and he immediately ended the brutal war upon taking his rightful place as their collective ruler.

Empyre #1 saw Hulkling leading the Kree and Skrull into battle against the Cotati, a group of plant-like aliens that threatened them all. While Teddy assured the Fantastic Four and the Avengers that the Cotati would only have to surrender to avoid bloodshed, Tony Stark didn't believe him and devised an alternate plan, which involved Ghost Rider taking over a Quinjet and turning his supernatural powers against the Kree-Skrull armada.

Ghost Rider's Transformation of an Avengers Quinjet

Ghost Rider pilots the Quinjet through space to take down various enemy ships

The Avengers have used Quinjets since Roy Thomas and John Buscema's Avengers #61, but they've rarely done as much damage as they did under the helm of Ghost Rider. After transforming the Quinjet into his own flaming machine, Robbie Reyes began to fire on the Kree-Skrull army, using his Penance Stare to make the pilots of the armada experience a lifetime of pain and regret in a few moments. He bobbed and weaved through the ships with a master pilot's expertise, even though Reyes had little flying experience.

While Robbie's attack was initially effective, it was ultimately short-lived, thanks to the Kree super-soldier Captain Glory. And since the Cotati turned out to be the real threat, Ghost Rider was essentially driving in the wrong direction and used his strongest weapon against the good guys.

Nevertheless, Ghost Rider's quinjet transformation was an impressive display of his powers. Considering the remarkable amount of ships and resources that the Kree-Skrull Empire had on hand, the fact that Ghost Rider was able to accomplish anything with a single ship against two alien armies was an impressive feat in and of itself. As the first Ghost Rider on Marvel's main Avengers team, Robbie took this opportunity to distinguish himself as a great asset to the team by offering an astonishing variety of skills, including transforming a Quinjet into an incredibly powerful weapon.
