The striking new full-length trailer for "Ghost in the Shell" provides the best look yet at the live-action film, laying out its premise as well as the mystery of The Major's past.
Amid the fast-paced action, CI effects and futuristic cityscapes, Scarlett Johansson takes center stage as the cyborg-human hybrid The Major, who grapples with a new terrorist threat, even as she tries to piece together the puzzle of her own life. "Everything they told you was a lie," she learns. "You had a family; remember that."
Based on Masamune Shirow’s popular cyberpunk manga, as well as Mamoru Oshii’s anime adaptations, the live-cation film stars Johansson as a cyborg-human hybrid who leads Section 9, a task force assigned to stop cyber-criminals. Now they face a new enemy devoted to destroying Hanka Robotic’s artificial intelligence technology.
Directed by Rupert Sanders (“Snow White and the Huntsman”), this version of “Ghost in the Shell” earned the approval of Oshii, who paid a visit to the set. “Scarlett Johansson playing Motoko from beginning to end has gone above and beyond my expectations for the role,” he said. “I’m sure this will be the most gorgeous film in the series so far.”
Opening March 31, “Ghost in the Shell” also stars Pilou Asbæk, Beat Takeshi Kitano, Juliette Binoche, Michael Pitt, Kaori Momoi, Rila Fukushima, Chin Han, Danusia Samal, Lasarus Ratuere, Yutaka Izumihara and Tuwanda Manyimo.
