An incredible My Neighbor Totoro Easter egg has been hiding in plain sight at the official Ghibli Museum in Tokyo, Japan.According to SoraNews24, the Ghibli Museum wrote about a three-year-old boy making a stunning observation regarding the building's appearance. The Ghibli Museum said the boy told his mom that the Catbus from My Neighbor Totoro was outside the building. After uploading a side-view photo of the building, the Ghibli Museum asked its followers if they could find the Catbus the boy saw. Since opening its doors in Oct. 2001, the Ghibli Museum has honored the anime studio's legacy for over 20 years. While the contents inside the building contain the rich production history of Studio Ghibli, visitors to the museum viewed the building itself as unremarkable. At least, that was the impression until a tweet from the museum's official account opened everyone's eyes to the incredible Easter egg hiding in plain sight.

Seeing Ghibli Museum Through the Eyes of a Child

The Ghibli Museum looking like the Catbus from My Neighbor Totoro was a surprise for fans who have previously visited the museum. The incident is similar to My Neighbor Totoro, as the two main kids in the movie were the only ones who could see Totoro and the Catbus.

In addition to its unique structure, there are other wonders to behold at the Ghibli Museum. Mei and the Kittenbus, a 13-minute sequel to My Neighbor Totoro, is only available at the museum. The short takes place right after the original movie, as Mei's mom has been home for two months after leaving the hospital. The story follows Mei's adventure with a child version of the Catbus called the Kittenbus.

Ghibli Fans Can Visit Its New Theme Park

Studio Ghibli fans can also travel to Nagoya, Japan, to further indulge in their love of all things Ghibli. Ghibli Park announced international fans could purchase tickets to the park beginning Jan. 10 through its official website. Attractions include Mei and Satsuki's house from My Neighbor Totoro, the antique shop from Whisper of the Heart, and an elevator tower inspired by Castle in the Sky.

Studio Ghibli will also release Hayao Miyazaki's final animated movie, How Do You Live?, on July 14, 2023, in Japan. While the upcoming film’s release date in Japan is confirmed, Studio Ghibli stated that the movie’s title was tentative and could change. The promotional movie poster is a close-up image of a bird.

After temporarily closing its doors during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Ghibli Museum is currently open to the public.
