Winter hiatus can be a difficult time, especially for fans of comic book-based TV shows who are eagerly awaiting the the next chapter in the adventures of their favorite characters. While the movie theaters find themselves well-stocked with massive blockbusters and critically acclaimed films, the television landscape is littered with reruns and holiday specials, leaving fans of shows like "The Flash," "Supergirl" and "The Walking Dead" counting down the days until the series return. But while some shows aren't returning until March, like "Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.," most shows are returning much, much sooner.

Below, CBR News runs down the shows returning in early 2016 -- or in the case of "DC's Legends of Tomorrow," "Lucifer" and "Agent Carter's" Season 2, debuting -- along with their air dates and a quick recap of where, exactly, each show's story left off. We've also included trailers and clips for each show's second half or season debut, so you're prepared to dive right in when they hit the ground running!

"Supergirl" returns Jan. 4

The last two episodes of "Supergirl" left fans with three huge reveals: Cat Grant's discovery that Supergirl is really Kara, Hank Henshaw's true identity as Martian Manhunter and the true reason Kara's mom, Alura, banished Astra to the Phantom Zone. When the show returns to CBS on Jan. 4, Kara will not only have to contend with Alura and Non's attack on National City, but also the return of Cat's son, Adam (who will be played by Melissa Benoist's real life husband, Blake Jenner.)

"iZombie" returns Jan. 12

When "iZombie" concluded it's fall finale, Liv was left struggling from her brain interactions with The Fog and the team was still trying to find a cure. When the show resumes on The CW on Jan. 12, Liv will try to solve the crime of a murdered actor on the fictional high school television show "Zombie High."

"Marvel's Agent Carter" returns Jan. 19

"Agent Carter" has been on hiatus for almost a year and fans have been eagerly awaiting the show's return. As seen in the promo above, "Agent Carter" will shift coasts in Season 2, moving from New York City to Los Angeles. When the show returns to ABC on Jan. 19, Peggy and Jarvis will find themselves working for the SSR in Hollywood, presumably solving a crime that takes place at Howard Stark's new movie studio.

"The Flash" returns Jan. 19

On the second season of "The Flash," Barry Allen has been facing his fiercest foe yet in Zoom, the dark and super-powerful speedster from Earth-2. When the show returns to The CW, also on Jan. 19, Barry will have to not only rescue his new girlfriend Patty from Zoom, but he'll also have to deal with the return of nemesis from last season: the Reverse Flash.

"Arrow" returns Jan. 20

The "Arrow" winter finale left fans reeling from the apparent death of everyone's favorite hacker, Felicity Smoak. When "Arrow" returns to The CW on Jan. 20, Oliver will have to do everything in his power to save the love of his life. If can't save her, then the remainder of "Arrow" Season 4 will likely turn to Oliver's attempts to avenge her death at the hands of Damien Darhk.

"DC's Legends of Tomorrow" debuts Jan. 21

"DC's Legends of Tomorrow" hasn't premiered yet, but "The Flash" and "Arrow" have done a fantastic job of setting up each character's strengths and weakness this season. When "Legends" debuts on The CW on Jan. 21, the White Canary, the Atom, Firestorm, two rogues (Captain Cold and Heat Wave), the Hawks and Rip Hunter will chase down an immortal villain named Vandal Savage through time and space, in what sounds like the best superhero/sci-fi mashup since "Guardians of the Galaxy."

"Lucifer" debuts Jan. 25

DC/Vertigo's "Lucifer" is getting the small screen treatment when the show premieres January 25 on Fox. The character, who originally debuted in Neil Gaiman's seminal "The Sandman," will leave his home in the underworld to solve crimes in Los Angeles. Tom Ellis ("Doctor Who") will play Lucifer, who in addition to working with the LAPD, will also a run a nightclub and use his powers to force people to confess to their sins.

"The Walking Dead" returns Feb. 14

The winter finale of "The Walking Dead" split up the group, leaving everyone to face the Walkers in different teams. Once the Walkers breached the wall, Alexandria was invaded and many lives were lost. Rick's team was able to escape the city, but only by disguising themselves as Walkers. When the show returns to AMC on Feb. 14, the group will deal with the consequences of what happened in Alexandria, while the threat of Negan looms large on the not-too-distant horizon.

"Gotham" returns Feb. 29

Season 2 of "Gotham" is dubbed "Rise of the Villains," and thus far, every episode has introduced new threats to Gotham with Gordon making some very compromising decisions to deal with them. When the show resumes on Fox Feb. 29, Gotham City will face two more major villains from DC Comics history: Mr. Freeze and Hugo Strange.

"Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." returns March 8

The "Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." winter finale was absolute bonkers. Coulson, Fitz and Ward went to another planet, and Coulson crossed his own lines of better judgement and killed Ward. The Hydra/Inhuman superweapon, "Death," even possessed Ward's dead body and made it back to Earth before the portal closed. When "Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." returns to ABC on March 8, S.H.I.E.L.D. will have to not only deal with the new Inhuman threats (including May's husband Andrew,) but also the walking embodiment of death itself, in the form of a zombie Ward.
