Duggan, Kuder Take Over Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy

Writer Gerry Duggan, artist Aaron Kuder and colorist Ive Svorcina will lead Marvel Comics’ Guardians of the Galaxy into 2017, the publisher has announced. The creative team’s debut arrives in May 2017 with “All-New Guardians of the Galaxy” #1.

Revealed today via, the new team follows a lengthy run by writer Brian Michael Bendis and, most recently, artist Valerio Schiti. Bendis helmed the cosmic team’s adventures for four years.

Gone are Ben Grimm, Kitty Pryde and the other Earth-originating heroes who recently made the team their home, leaving Star-Lord as the last Terran standing, alongside Gamora, Rocket, a pint-sized Groot who can’t seem to bulk up, and a now-pacifist Drax.

“When our story picks up, Groot is small and doesn’t seem to be growing large,” Duggan told Comic Book. “We don’t quite know why. The Guardians don’t know why. The readers won’t have very long to find that will be a problem moving forward, in a fun way, I hope. Drax is done destroying. Something has happened to him to that has made him leave his swords down. Drax is still Drax. He wants to destroy, he’s just holding back for now. It’s a fun turn for him as he struggles with pacifism like an alcoholic might struggle in a bar.”

“All the pieces fell together in the way that said I can leave in a big, classy cool way, and at the same time, get the new guys ready and give them a really strong push,” Bendis said of his decision to leave the title in an interview last December. “Because I know the new writer very well, I was able to go, ‘What do you want? What do you need from me? What don’t you need from me? Who’s staying? Who’s going?’ I’m making a concerted effort to leave big and for the statement of the book that I’ve been working on for all these years to have its final moment and at the same time, setup for a new person.”

“All-New Guardians of the Galaxy” #1 arrives in May from the team of Gerry Duggan, Aaron Kuder and Ive Svorcina, and will ship twice-monthly.
