Nightflyers, the sci-fi horror drama based on the 1980 novella by Game of Thrones author George R.R. Martin, won't return for a second season on Syfy.

The series, which premiered in December, follows eight scientists and a powerful telepath who embark on a journey to the end of the solar system in hopes of making contact with an ancient, nomadic race of aliens. They instead find horror aboard their vessel, manned by a tight-knit crew and a reclusive captain, as an unseen force begins picking them off one by one.

As noted by The Hollywood Reporter, Nightflyers was something of a gamble for the cable channel, given its high production budget; it's believed to be the most expensive drama developed by Syfy. Netflix was brought on as co-producer, and gained the exclusive first-run rights for international broadcast, which helped offset the costs for the NBCUniversal-owned network. However, Nightflyers had difficulty finding an audience, with viewership declining from 623,000 with the premiere to just 420,000 for what's now the series finale.
