Don't expect to hear any spoilers about the ending of HBO's Game of Thrones television show from series author George R. R. Martin.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Martin said watching the success of the books and the television series has been “an incredible ride,” but added, “Obviously, I wished I finished these books sooner so the show hadn’t gotten ahead of me. I never anticipated that.”

While Martin has reportedly given showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss a rough outline of how he intends to end the series of novels, it’s unclear how closely they stuck to the author’s plans as they’ve moved forward with the show. Apparently, Martin himself is somewhat in the dark when it comes to Benioff and Weiss’s plans for Season 8.

“I haven’t read the [final-season] scripts and haven’t been able to visit the set because I’ve been working on Winds,” Martin revealed. “I know some of the things. But there’s a lot of minor-character [arcs] they’ll be coming up with on their own. And, of course, they passed me several years ago. There may be important discrepancies.”

Likewise, the showrunners are uncertain as to whether Martin will stick to the outline he provided or if he will change plot points as he continues writing the novels. “George discovers a lot of stuff while he’s writing,” Benioff said. So it seems that fans of both the books and the series will have to wait and see how events play out.

Season 8 of Game of Thrones, the show’s final season, will premiere April 14. It will feature six episodes with longer than usual runtimes. The HBO drama stars Peter Dinklage as Tyrion Lannister, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau as Jaime Lannister, Lena Headey as Cersei Lannister, Emilia Clarke as Daenerys Targaryen, Sophie Turner as Sansa Stark, Maisie Williams as Arya Stark and Kit Harington as Jon Snow.
