George R.R. Martin's 'Hedge Knight' Sells Out

Official Press Release

ORANGE, CA -- Image Comics has announced that Diamond has completely sold out of GEORGE R.R. MARTIN'S THE HEDGE KNIGHT #1 by George R.R. Martin, Ben Avery, Mike S. Miller and Mike Crowell. GEORGE R.R. MARTIN'S THE HEDGE KNIGHT #1 was available with three covers by Mike S. Miller, Michael Kaluta and the Brothers Hildebrandt.

"Given the broad appeal of this title's source material, I think it's clear GEORGE R.R. MARTIN'S THE HEDGE KNIGHT was under-ordered," said Image Director of Marketing Eric Stephenson. "Everyone who picked up the preview in San Diego was incredibly enthusiastic about this book, and when copies of the first issue hit Wizard World Chicago last month, they immediately sold out."

"Unless you read the original story, you've never read anything like this before," said Les Dabel, Vice President and New Business Director of Roaring Studios. "It's a powerful story driven by characters and circumstances rather than by the tired clichés you tend to find in comics these days. We were actually a bit worried about the way the first book in the series would be received because it doesn't really have any significant action sequences."

Retailer reaction to the title has been incredibly strong, with many store owners reporting the book sold out in its first week of release.

"We blew out of our initial 100 copies in three days, re-ordered 40 more and sold out in another week," said Lee Krause of Comics Madness in Chino, CA. "We're on our second re-order and it's still selling well. It's good to finally see a well-written, well-drawn book that reaches a broader spectrum of readers than we usually see in the market."

"It's one of our best-selling Image books of the year," added Joe Field, owner of Flying Colors Comics in Concord, CA. "It brings something to the store that we didn't have before: the rabid George R.R. Martin fan!"

To help the book stand out as a serious work of fantasy, a number of top fantasy artists were recruited to design variant covers.

"A lot of fans picked up this book because of the art and then emailed us later to thank us for also providing a great story," laughed Dabel. "The strength of George R. R. Martin's original writing, coupled with the great adaptive skills of Ben Avery and the wonderful visual storytelling of Mike S. Miller, helps to make this already incredible novella into an equally incredible comic."

Dabel noted that upcoming issues of GEORGE R.R. MARTIN'S THE HEDGE KNIGHT will feature special variant covers by Boris Vallejo and Julie Bell (issue #2), Tom Mandrake (issue #3), Tom Yeates (issue #4) and Ted Nasmith (issue #5).

GEORGE R.R. MARTIN'S THE HEDGE KNIGHT #2 will go on sale September 10.
