Fans of director Zack Snyder's Man of Steel have been eagerly awaiting news regarding a sequel since the first film hit theaters back in 2013. While Warner Bros. has yet to formally announce Man of Steel 2, rumors have continually surfaced suggesting that a sequel is very much in the works and possibly even on track for a 2020 release. Now, former DC President and Chief Creative Officer Geoff Johns has commented on the possibility of a sequel.

In an interview with the folks at Collider during Comic-Con International, Johns was asked about a follow-up to Man of Steel. While he obviously couldn't confirm or deny anything, Johns reaffirmed the interviewer's comment that a sequel is very much needed. "You're absolutely right," he stated. "And I know, look working with Walter Hamada and Toby [Emmerich] over there... they feel the same way. So, um, you know, when you talk to them, you should absolutely ask them that question."

It's unfortunately a non-answer for those looking for concrete information. However, Johns did suggest that Warner Bros. understands the love for the character and how important he is, implying that perhaps news isn't too far off. "Everyone loves Superman and knows how important Superman is," Johns said. "Again, it's not in my wheelhouse now to really say anything beyond that, but yeah, they agree with your sentiment."

An earlier rumor indicated that Man of Steel 2 was heading for a 2020 release. However, with little to no movement on the project since then, that does seem unlikely for the time being. Director Matthew Vaughn was reportedly in talks at one point to helm Man of Steel 2, however, that was before Justice League underperformed at the box office and led to plenty of shake-ups behind the scenes at Warner Bros. -- which also led to a massive overhaul of the studio's planned DC slate.

Still, Man of Steel 2 does appear to be coming. It's just a matter of when at this point.
