A report earlier today indicated that New Line executive Walter Hamada would step in to replace Jon Berg and Geoff Johns, becoming head of Warner Bros. Pictures' DC Films. However, it now sounds like Hamada and Johns will actually be co-heads of DC Films, with Hamada taking on the title of President of DC-Based Film Production.
Johns and Berg were placed in charge of DC Films in 2016 after the disappointing performance of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. The new change-up comes after the lackluster box office performance of Justice League, which is expected to only take in approximately $675 million. Berg stepped down last month following news of the film's troubled release. Although the DC Extended Universe has been fairly successful financially, Wonder Woman is one of the few films to also receive widespread critical praise.
Johns offered some positive words for Hamada after the announcement and noted that the two are already working well together on Shazam! Hamada helmed several successful films this past summer, including It and Annabelle: Creation. He's currently overseeing production on Shazam! Johns will remain both DC Entertainment President and Chief Creative Officer.
Aquaman, which stars Jason Momoa as the titular sea king, is the next film slated in the DC Extended Universe and will release on Dec. 21. Shazam! is scheduled to start filming in February and release on April 5, 2019.
