Set in a dystopian future, gen:LOCK stars Jordan as Julian Chase, Maisie Williams as Cammie MacCloud, Kōichi Yamadera as Kazu Iida, Golshifteh Farahani as Yaz Madrani and Asia Kate Dillon as Val Romanyszyn. The series premiered its first season on Rooster Teeth FIRST in January 2019. gen:LOCK Season 1 ran for a total of eight episodes, concluding in March 2019. It made the jump to television not long after, airing on Toonami between August and September 2019.

In October 2019, it was confirmed that gen:LOCK had been renewed for second season, which would debut exclusively on the then-upcoming HBO Max streaming service before being made available to Rooster Teeth FIRST members after the fact. Multiple updates on Season 2 subsequently followed, though a premiere date remained elusive until today. That being said, gen:LOCK Season 1 was added to HBO Max back in February of this year, meaning subscribers looking to catch up on the series before Season 2 drops can easily do so.

Moreover, a digital-first gen:LOCK comic book series set between the events of Seasons 1 and 2 was published by DC Comics starting in September 2019. Written by Collin Kelly and Jackson Lanzing and illustrated by Carlo Barberi with inks by Walden Wong, DC's gen:LOCK ran for a total of 14 digital chapters, which were supposed to be collected into seven physical issues.

However, the title's serialized print run was cut short amid the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic in 2020. Only a very small number of copies of gen:LOCK #6 saw the light of day, with issue #7 not releasing in print at all. That said, the gen:LOCK comic series was ultimately printed in its entirety in the eventual trade paperback, which released in August 2020. Storm Warning, a gen:LOCK tie-in novel written by Melissa Scott that focuses on the character of Cammie, followed suit in October 2020.
