This year marks the 50th anniversary of General Mills' Monster Cereals lineup, which began with the launch of chocolate-flavored Count Chocula and strawberry-flavored Franken Berry cereals in 1971. The blueberry-flavored cereal Boo Berry followed shortly after, premiering in 1973. Fruit Brute and Fruity Yummy Mummy, which were introduced in 1974 and 1988 respectively, will make their returns in the Monster Mash cereal after both being discontinued in 2014.

The three remaining Monster Cereals mascots of 2014 received updated looks courtesy of DC artists. Jim Lee illustrated Boo Berry, Dave Johnson illustrated Franken Berry and Terry and Rachel Dodson illustrated Count Chocula for limited edition box art and comic strips. "I put a lot of thought in it. It was stressful," Lee said at the time of redesigning Boo Berry. "Drawing simpler characters is a lot more work and harder than drawing something that's more complicated or has a lot of renderings. Every line counts and every distance between the eyes and the ears, it's all super critical." The three monsters have maintained their original design following the DC collaboration and will do so for the Monster Mash art.

General Mills released two limited-edition cereals to grocery store shelves last month. One was a new version of Lucky Charms cereal named Galactic Lucky Charms. The interstellar update to the cereal added three new marshmallow charms, two planets and a rocket to its classic lineup of eight charms. The other limited-edition cereal was to promote the upcoming film Ghostbusters: Afterlife. The promotional cereal featured fruit-flavored corn puffs and marshmallows shaped like ghosts and ectoplasm.
