The blood-spattered new trailer for Gen V gave a first look at some of the show's new characters, plus some returning faces from parent show The Boys, and one who isn't quite either: The Deep, but in puppet form. After Gen V's trailer was released on Saturday, the official Twitter for The Boys shared three still images from it, one of which gave a close-up view of a scene that appears to take place on some kind of Sesame Street-style children's show. Actor Jason Ritter, wearing a cardigan and tie, sits next to a puppet which has The Deep's hair and stubble. His costume is zipped down to show a puppetized version of the gills on his chest.RELATED: The Boys Spinoff Gen V Announces Filming Wrap With BTS Photos[EMBED_TWITTER]https://twitter.com/TheBoysTV/status/1599184151324024833[/EMBED_TWITTER]So far, there's been no explanation for The Deep or the other puppets in the teaser trailer. Gen V will introduce a new cast of characters for its college-themed setting, although crossovers are already evident with some faces from The Boys showing up, including The Deep's former teammate A-Train.

Who Is the Deep (and Why Is His Puppet So Pathetic)?

Played by Chace Crawford, The Deep has been a part of The Boys since its first episode. A member of The Seven who can breathe underwater and communicate with sea creatures, he's had a primarily antagonistic role as he readily abuses his fame and power for his own selfish ends. Season 3 saw The Deep brought low as he desperately tried everything to stay in the good graces of Homelander and the adoring public, and some of the season's most outrageous moments involved The Deep's sexual relationships with octopi.

The Boys, based on the comic series of the same name by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson, is a satirical look at the superhero genre set in a world where "supes" are idolized for their extraordinary powers, but are apathetic and corrupt in their private lives. The show has had three successful seasons on Prime Video and is currently filming its fourth, which has not yet had a release window announced.

Gen V is the first live-action spinoff of The Boys, taking place at a "superhero campus" called Godlokin University. In Ennis and Robertson's comics, Godlokin is The Boys' spin on Marvel's X-Men, with the superpowered students forming a team called the G-Men. Though the G-Men are regarded as a profitable asset for The Boys' malicious superhero corporation, Vought, their private lives are as criminal as The Seven's.

Gen V is set to release sometime in 2023. No official release date has been revealed at this time.
