Cliff Bleszinski is a name known to most gamers. He's the guy who created the Gears of War, after all. It's a video game series that has long been pegged for a film adaptation, but every time plans sound like they're starting to materialize, things fizzle out soon after. The project has been lying dormant for a while now, since last April, after Len Wiseman left the project and the script from Chris Morgan and Billy Ray went in for an overhaul. There's nothing new happening, but at least we can say this as confirmed fact instead of speculation.
Bleszinski said as much in a recent interview with GameFront, using two words to describe the project that no fan ever wants to hear: "development hell." That's where the Gears movie sits right now. Here's the full quote from the game's creator:
It’s in development hell right now. Who knows what’ll happen. It took however many years for Peter Jackson to make Lord of the Rings. Hollywood is a complicated beast. There’s all sorts of weirdness going on with who’s working on it, what’s going on here and there. But, hopefully it happens. Maybe the Gears 3 success will generate more interest in it. I’d love to see it. I’d rather have a movie that’s great and true to the franchise, than a movie that sucks. I’d rather not have a movie, than a movie that sucks.
He's saying all the right things in terms of what he wants to see but nothing encouraging about our prospects of seeing it any time soon. Ah, well. At least David O. Russell is off the Uncharted movie.
