Wen shared artwork for several of the film’s planned characters, including Katse, the main villain, Ryu/Tiny, Jinpei/Keyop, Mark/Ken, Jun and others.

The planned CGI film would have been produced by Imagi Films and distributed by Warner Bros. It began development in 2004 and struggled repeatedly to move forward, going through several directors and screenwriters, including DC Comics alumnus Paul Dini. Dini wrote early script treatments for the film but left the project due to creative differences.

In 2011, Imagi filed for bankruptcy and shut down its animation studio, effectively canceling the film.

A toy line would have been released as well, but it was also abandoned after production on the movie came to a halt.

Fans on Instagram expressed regret that the film was never made, though they can enjoy the original anime series Science Ninja Team Gatchaman, as well as the 2013 live-action Japanese movie based in the series.
