Gary Larson's The Far Side is coming back, though exactly how isn't clear at this time.

The Far Side's website was updated with the following text: "Uncommon, unreal, and (soon-to-be) unfrozen. A new online era of The Far Side is coming!" Additional information about what this might mean was not provided.

First published in 1980, The Far Side ran until 1995, when Larson retired from cartooning. The surrealistic single-panel comic won both National Cartoonist Society Newspaper Panel Cartoon Awards and Reuben Awards during its time in print. The series has received numerous reprints since its original run and is one of the most recognizable in the world. An animated film based on the comic, called Gary Larson's Tales From the Far Side, released in 1994, with a sequel in 1997.

In 1999, Larson asked fans not to put his work on the internet, writing, "So, in a nutshell (probably an unfortunate choice of words for me), I only ask that this respect be returned, and the way for anyone to do that is to please, please refrain from putting The Far Side out on the Internet. These cartoons are my 'children,' of sorts, and like a parent, I'm concerned about where they go at night without telling me. And, seeing them at someone's web site is like getting the call at 2:00 a.m. that goes, 'Uh, Dad, you're not going to like this much, but guess where I am.'"
