GameStop, the longstanding videogame retailer, is joining an increasing number of businesses and retail chains in trying to slow the spread of the global coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

The company announced in a statement Thursday it's implementing measures similar to those taken by other stores. "GameStop is working diligently during this unprecedented time to provide our customers and associates with the safest environment possible," the statement reads. "We are implementing changes to our retail operations so that we may continue to provide products to our customers that allows them to stay connected, and provide products that allows business and consumers to work remotely."

The changes being taken include restricting the number of customers and other social distancing practices, reduction of store hours, suspending the company's trade-in program, and postponing all in-store events such as product releases and gaming competitions.

The latest measures were outlined in an updated open letter to the retailer's customers from company CEO George Sherman.

The steps taken come in the aftermath of the company's reported inability and unwillingness to join other businesses in undertaking efforts to slow the spread of the disease. On Tuesday, reports surfaced stating GameStop has been unable to procure hand sanitizers and other cleaning supplies for its stores. Additional reports claimed the company's headquarters has ordered its stores to remain open, even in areas being locked down by local governments.
