Resident Evil Village is both a very modern experience as well as an homage to classic stories in Gothic horror. Featuring vampires, werewolves and even Frankenstein monsters, Village is a departure from the Resident Evil series with its more fantastical brand of horror while retaining much of the series' roots through a sci-fi origin for the villains and schlocky B-movie dialogue. However, its short length leaves many players wanting more.

Emphasizing action and thrills above the dread-filled horror of Resident Evil VIIVillage is much more like the groundbreaking Resident Evil 4 in its combination of fast-paced gunplay and survival horror roots. Fans of this game will find similar enjoyment from these other titles that feature this same genre fusion alongside their own brand of Gothic and monstrous horror.

Amnesia: The Dark Descent

One of the most famous first-person horror titles ever made, Amnesia is very similar to Resident Evil Village in that it takes place in a wintery, Gothic horror setting. Following the exploits of the amnesiac Daniel as he finds himself lost in a labyrinthine mansion, he must evade the various abominations and traps that litter his path as he uncovers the mystery of who he is and why this castle has descended into chaos. Highlighting a mechanic unique for its time, Daniel has absolutely no means of fighting the monsters in his path, making the scares much more potent as he hides within closets and corners praying that the beasts don't get him.

Silent Hill 1

Silent Hill 1 Other Realm

Resident Evil's rival in the survival horror genre is Silent Hill. The original title has many parallels to Village. A father explores a foggy, monster-ridden village all in an attempt to save his daughter from a dangerous cult. Like Ethan Winters, Silent Hill's protagonist Harry Mason is a contrast to other Resident Evil protagonists by being a normal man, heightening the danger due to his status and making him more relatable to the player. Despite the similarities between these games, a combination of innovative fog effects, visual design and impending psychological dread makes Silent Hill a unique experience all on its own.

Yet another first-person horror game set in a small town, Outlast II follows a married couple of investigative journalists venturing into the Arizona village of Temple Gate in order to solve a murder, but they become separated in the process. Protagonist Blake Langermann needs to find his wife and uncover the mystery behind Temple Gate's fanatical cult of murderers as he scrambles to escape the madness. Much like AmnesiaOutlast II features no direct combat whatsoever, so the horrors of exploring the dilapidated village are even more pronounced.

The Evil Within

From the creator of Resident Evil himself, Shinji Mikami, The Evil Within has the player step into the shoes of detective Sebastian Castellanos as he is thrust into an alternate world. More action and stealth-heavy than other horror titles on this list, The Evil Within takes a massive amount of inspiration from its Capcom predecessor with an emphasis on scrounging for limited resources while facing down a wide variety of dangerous monstrosities. With an oppressive atmosphere and gritty visuals, The Evil Within is a perfect modern return to classic Resident Evil-style survival horror.

Bloodborne

Bloodborne Vicar Amelia

With werewolves, vampires and other Gothic monstrosities swarming Resident Evil Village, players might like to play a game that doubles down on supernatural horror and animalistic transformations. That is, if they have the patience for it. Much like FromSoftware's other titles, Bloodborne is absolutely relentless and unforgiving in its gameplay with dozens of villagers, werewolves and other beasts roaming Yharnam out to kill the player. It is the challenging difficulty and terrifying monster designs that lend themselves very well to Bloodborne's style of horror, increasing tension and scaring the player in a multitude of ways.
