David Benioff and D.B. Weiss reveal which Game of Thrones scene went too far in the fantasy series' 73-episode run. While the HBO Ice and Fire-based epic was known for its shocking and gruesome death scenes, the showrunners say one went further than it should have.

Heading back to the early days of the hit series, viewers might remember the death of a relatively minor character called Ser Hugh of the Vale. Becoming one of the Mountain's many victims, Hugh lost his life during the jousting tournament in Game of Thrones' fourth episode. As King's Landing celebrated Ned Stark's appointment to the Small Council, Ser Hugh was impaled by a splintered lance.

Twitter user @ForArya explains how the duo highlighted the death of Sir Hugh of the Vale as a step too far. Speaking at 2019's Austin Film Festival, Benioff said, "TBH we went too far with some of those" when asked about the many Game of Thrones deaths. He went on to explain how Ser Hugh's death mirrored the chilling moment in Ozark Season 1 when Jason Bateman's Marty had his toenail ripped off by a cartel boss.

Ser Hugh's death is definitely an extended swansong as he falls to the floor and is seen slowly bleeding out with a shard of wood sticking out from his throat. For a long time, there has been a mystery surrounding Ser Hugh's death, with theorists suggesting Ser Gregor Clegane was tasked with killing him before Ned Stark could quiz the young knight about Jon Arryn's death.

Admittedly, the death of a minor character like Sir Hugh isn't exactly up there with Game of Thrones' most memorable. More obvious choices would be the likes of Joffrey's graphic choking, Oberyn Martell having his head crushed by the Mountain or the Red Wedding massacre. Elsewhere, Rodrik Cassel's botched beheading and Meryn Trant's murder by Arya also stand out as being particularly graphic.

Previously, fans have said the moment the innocent Shireen Baratheon was burned at the stake was a turning point for Game of Thrones taking things too far. Nell Tiger Free also told fans that the death of Myrcella Baratheon was originally supposed to be a lot gorier. As Benioff says though, "some of those” implies he has more than one scene in mind when it comes to taking things too far.
