In the continuing saga of the dueling live-action Mulans, Sony Pictures International Productions just took a major step forward tapping Alex Graves to direct the film. A Hollywood veteran who's helmed some of the most gripping installments of HBO's mega-hit "Game of Thrones," will now bring Sony's adaptation of the Chinese legend to life.

Graves, also an alumnus of "Shameless," "The West Wing" and other dramas, will steer the Jason Keller-scripted film, one of two adaptations of the Hua Mulan story currently on the horizon. The other, Disney's live-action take on its own 1998 animated film of the same name, recently made headlines when a rumor circulated that Oscar-winning director Ang Lee passed on the film.

While the films will undoubtedly have many differences, there's at least one major similarity beyond source material. Both Disney and Sony have confirmed that their films will not be white-washed, and both have committed to casting a Chinese lead. Disney stated outright that "all primary roles, including the love interest, are Chinese,” while Sony's film will be a Chinese co-production, according to Deadline.

Sony's "Mulan" does not yet have a release date; Disney's “Mulan” is expected to hit theaters on November 2, 2018.
