Twenty months after the Season 7 finale, Game of Thrones finally returns Sunday for its its eighth and final season on HBO. While millions of viewers undoubtedly will watch the final six episodes through HBO subscriptions on cable, in this rapidly changing media landscape, many are increasingly turning to online options to stream their favorite series. The acclaimed fantasy drama is no exception.
With that in mind, here are completely legal options to stream Game of Thrones for fans who don't have cable, or else are looking to watch the final episodes on the go rather than wait until its conclusion to purchase the whole season iTunes, Amazon or VUDU.
HBO's standalone premium streaming service allows viewers to watch its programming without the need of a cable subscription. The platform lets subscribers stream all programming on the same day and date, especially invaluable for those who can't bear to wait an extra second to get re-immersed in the latest goings-on in Westeros.
The service is $14.99 a month, with a free trial period lasting one week. As a reminder, the subscription automatically renews itself each month unless canceled by the subscriber.
For those who have an HBO cable subscription, their streaming worries have already been solved, even if they're not aware of it. Bundled with every paid subscription for HBO's conventional service is access to HBO Go, intended for those may not have immediate access to their cable television, or prefer viewing on their mobile devices.
As HBO Go is an extension of standard HBO cable subscriptions, those with access to the streaming platform have it at their disposal at no extra charge.
For viewers who like to keep all their streaming services and programming under one platform, Hulu does offer an extension allowing viewers to watch HBO Now through cross-platform functionality instead of having to boot up HBO Now separately.
A basic Hulu package is $6.99 a month for streaming with ads, before the HBO extension, while the ad-free subscription is $11.99 a month. The extension can be activated through Hulu's settings for HBO Now's usual price of $14.99 a month. For those with Spotify Premium subscriptions, the combined Spotify and base Hulu package is $12.99 a month, not counting the price of the HBO Now extension. Hulu comes with a 30-day free trial, while the extension has a free seven-day trial like HBO Now.
Similar to Hulu, Amazon Instant Video offers a channel through its video streaming service for those with Amazon Prime subscriptions interested in watching HBO Now via cross-platform viewing. Prime Channels are easily activated or canceled.
Amazon Prime subscriptions are $12.99 a month, or $119 a year, while college students can pay as little as $6.49 a month, or $59 a year, not counting the HBO Now Prime Channel. As with the Hulu extension and HBO Now subscription, the cost for the HBO Now Prime Channel is $14.99 a month with a seven-day free trial on top of the standard subscription costs for Amazon Prime.
Game of Thrones Season 8 premieres Sunday. The HBO drama stars Peter Dinklage as Tyrion Lannister, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau as Jaime Lannister, Lena Headey as Cersei Lannister, Emilia Clarke as Daenerys Targaryen, Sophie Turner as Sansa Stark, Maisie Williams as Arya Stark and Kit Harington as Jon Snow.
