Game of Thrones has made history in the run-up to this year's Emmy Awards ceremony.

Having received 32 nominations for its controversial eighth and final season, the HBO phenomenon accrued the most nominations for a TV program in a single season. The previous record-holder was set 25 years ago by NYPD Blue.

Although up for for a plethora of categories, it turns out some of the acting nominations had to be self-submitted by the performers themselves.

Most notably, Gwendoline Christie (Brienne of Tarth) and Alfie Allen (Theon Greyjoy) both self-submitted and are now nominated for the supporting categories award. Carice van Houten, who played Melisandre, also self-submitted and has been nominated in the guest actress category.

Leading acting was filled by Emilia Clarke (Daenerys Targaryen) and Kit Harington (Jon Snow). Up until Season 7, the pair used to submit in the supporting categories along with the rest of the cast.
