Even though Game of Thrones has come to an end, it's "coffee cup gate" is still plaguing the HBO series. Now, showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss have given their take on the gaffe.

The producing duo broke their post-Game of Thrones silence with a rare interview on Japanese station Star Channel. During the interview, Benioff and Weiss were asked about the coffee cup gaffe in Episode 4 of the final season. Benioff compared the error to Persian rugs, joking, “It’s tradition that you make a little mistake when making the rug because only God can do anything perfect”

He also elaborated more on the situation. “We were concentrating so much on Daenerys and Jon Snow that we just didn’t see this coffee cup right in the middle,” he admitted. “So at first I couldn’t believe it, and then it was an embarrassment; ‘how did we not see this coffee cup in the middle of the shot?’ And then, eventually, it was just funny. This one is just a mistake, and it’s kind of funny to us now.”

With Game of Thrones concluded, Benioff and Weiss are leaving Westeros for Netflix, having linked an exclusive deal with the streaming service. They will also be working on a new series of Star Wars films.
