If you think figuring out the identity of Jon Snow's parents is difficult, try deciphering the ratings for the "Game of Thrones" Season 6 premiere.

Sunday's episode, "The Red Woman," drew a series-record 10.7 million viewers, when the on-air premiere, two encores and initial streaming data from HBO Now and HBO Go. However, if we look just at the 9 p.m. telecast, the hit HBO drama clocked 7.94 million total viewers and a 4.2 rating among adults 18-49. That's down, if only by 0.6 percent, from the total viewers who tuned in for the Season 5 premiere; the key demo slipped by 5 percent.

Viewers from HBO's free preview weekend aren't counted in those Nielsen ratings.

That 10.7 million figure represents a gain of 9 percent from the Season 5 premiere (9.8 million), and beats the previous series record of 10.3 million set by the Season 5 finale.

However, as The Hollywood Reporter points out, a more accurate snapshot of the numbers will come when HBO releases live-plus-seven-day numbers.

"Game of Thrones" airs Sundays at 9 p.m. ET/PT on HBO.
