With more than three months until the April 24 premiere of the drama's sixth season, HBO has confirmed talks are under way to continue "Game of Thrones" through Season 8. However, it's unclear whether that will mark the end of the series.
The announcement by programming president Michael Lombardo comes as no surprise, as the adaptation of George R.R. Martin's bestselling fantasy novels has garnered record ratings and critical acclaim. Showunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss have signaled their intent to end the series sometime around Season 8, but HBO has made clear it would like to go beyond that.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, a former announcement is expected soon.
Season 6 will enter uncharted territory, surpassing the plot points of Martin's "A Song of Ice and Fire" series. The sixth novel, "The Winds of Winter," won't be released before the show's return in April.
