'Game of Thrones' Leads 2016 Emmy Nominations

HBO's "Game of Thrones" leads the field for the 68th Primetime Emmy Awards with 23 nominations, including outstanding drama series. On its heels is "The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story," which received 22 nods, including for limited series.

"Thrones," which took home best drama last year, faces competition in the category from "The Americans," "Better Call Saul," "Downton Abbey," "Homeland," "House of Cards" and "Mr. Robot." While some thought Netflix's "Jessica Jones" might have a shot at a nomination for best drama, neither the series nor star Krysten Ritter were recognized when the names were announced this morning. (However, if it's any consolation, the show was nominated for outstanding main title design and theme music.)

In the comedy division, perennial favorites "Modern Family" and "Veep" are joined by “Blackish," "Master of None," "Silicon Valley," "Transparent" and "Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt."

As with the fight for the Iron Throne, the stars of "Game of Thrones" may have to fight it out in the supporting actor and actress categories: Peter Dinklage, Kit Harington, Lena Headey, Emilia Clarke and Maisie Williams are all nominated.

The winners of the 68th Primetime Emmy Awards will be announced Sept. 18. Here's the full list of nominees in the key categories announced this morning:
