HBO Max is reportedly in the early stages of development on a Game of Thrones adult animated series.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, meetings with writers are already underway, though no deals have been struck. THR makes a point to mention that it is entirely possible an animated drama based in the world of Game of Thrones may not materialize.

The idea behind a Game of Thrones series is to continue the expansion of George R.R. Martin's universe, which so far includes multiple HBO spinoffs. HBO executives, led by Francesca Orsi, are reportedly holding meetings with Martin for these brainstorming sessions.

The most recent spinoff is Tales of Dunk and Egg and is based on the novels by George R. Martin. The books take place 90 years before the events of the smash-hit HBO series and star Ser Duncan the Tall (Dunk) and a young Aegon V Targaryen (Egg). HBO placed a series order for House of the Dragon, another prequel to Game of Thrones, in October 2019. The series will tell the story of House Targaryen and take place 300 years before the original series. House of the Dragon will be based on George R.R. Martin’s Fire & Blood, a compilation of stories and historical records related to House Targaryen.

The network also pulled the plug on another Game of Thrones prequel starring Naomi Watts back in October 2019. According to George R.R. Martin, who co-wrote the pilot episode with Goldman, the prequel series would have been set 4,000 years before the events of the parent show, long before the establishment of any of the Great Houses of Westeros fans are accustomed to. Instead, it would chronicle "the world's descent from the golden Age of Heroes into its darkest hour. And only one thing is for sure: from the horrifying secrets of Westeros’ history to the true origin of the white walkers, the mysteries of the East to the Starks of legend… it’s not the story we think we know."
