Game of Thrones star Emilia Clarke, who played Daenerys Targaryen throughout the series, has shared her surprise at the cancelation of HBO’s planned prequel series.

“It was kind of astonishing,” Clarke told People.com during the New York premiere for her new movie, Last Christmas. “The show very much ended and we heard about the prequel and we’re like, ‘Okay, cool,’ but didn’t have any understanding of what it might be or who was involved. If it wasn’t meant to happen now, it wasn’t as perfect as everybody wanted it to have been, so it was for the right reasons. Maybe it will get reincarnated.”

Despite this cancelation, HBO is moving forward with another spin-off show based on the fantasy franchise. House of the Dragon has already been green-lit for a 10-episode straight-to-series order. It is based on Martin’s recent Fire and Blood novel, which charts the history of the Targaryens.

George R.R. Martin -- author of the Song of Ice and Fire novels, which Game of Throne is based on --  was co-creating the planned series with showrunner Jane Goldman (X-Men: First Class, Kingsman: The Secret Service, Kick-Ass). The showrunners of Game of Thrones, David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, were not involved. The prequel was to be set approximately 5,000 years before the story told across Game of Thrones' eight seasons. Martin had previously stated that the Starks would be involved, but would not feature the Lannisters as the prequel would take place before their growth into a powerful house.
