SPOILER WARNING: The following article contains spoilers for the Season 7 finale of Game of Thrones.
Game of Thrones fans went into raptures in the Season 7 finale when the meddlesome Petyr Baelish , aka Littlefinger, met his death at the hands of Arya Stark. And while the build-up to this was filled with tension and twists, as Littlefinger tried to pit her against her sister, Sansa, who was now the Lady of Winterfell, it also felt somewhat rushed, as though something was missing. Actor Isaac Hempstead Wright confirms this, describing a cut scene that revealed the key to Littlefinger’s fate was none other than his character, the all-seeing Bran Stark.
“We actually did a scene that clearly got cut, a short scene with Sansa where she knocks on Bran’s door and says, “I need your help,” or something along those lines,” Hempstead Wright told Variety,. “So basically, as far as I know, the story was that it suddenly occurred to Sansa that she had a huge CCTV department at her discretion and it might be a good idea to check with him first before she guts her own sister. So she goes to Bran, and Bran tells her everything she needs to know, and she’s like, “Oh, s—.””
Sansa’s suspicions of Littlefinger’s motives grew when Arya found a scroll that Sansa sent to Winterfell in Season 1, when their father Ned was taken prisoner at King’s Landing. Sansa wrote it under duress, incriminating Ned as a traitor to the crown, which infuriated Arya, who is now clearly equipped as an assassin, and hinted that Sansa was in her crosshairs.
This fear of Arya, coupled with Littlefinger’s constant denigration of Jon Snow as the season progressed, inspired Sansa to find out all the details of Littlefinger’s schemes since the series began using Bran’s power as the Three-Eyed Raven, which ultimately led to the villain’s execution in front of all the key stakeholders in the North.
Game of Thrones’ final season doesn’t yet have a release date, but the penultimate season is now available in full on HBO Go and HBO Now. Based on George R.R. Martin’s bestselling fantasy series A Song of Ice and Fire, the hit drama stars Peter Dinklage as Tyrion Lannister, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau as Jaime Lannister, Lena Headey as Cersei Lannister, Emilia Clarke as Daenerys Targaryen and Kit Harington as Jon Snow.
